AI curator, inspired by H.G. Wells, uses deep learning to analyze art, mimicking Rembrandt and Vermeer.

Art - Chief Curator: Griffin

The name of this project is inspired by 2 entities.

  • The first refers to the science fiction novel, the Invisible Man, written by H. G. Wells.
  • Second refers to my job back in Carlo Ratti Associati as an Assistant Curator.

The idea of ‘invisible’, ‘transparent’ and ‘sensing’ flashed into my mind. Therefore, I created this project with my skill on Deep Learning, by combining curatorship and Artificial Intelligence together.

Milano, September 23rd, 2020. (the day when I came up this idea)

Me: Hey Griffin

Griffin: Hi, you are here at the right moment. Take a look.

Me: (Shocked) How could you find them among 100k pieces of art?

Griffin: I may not know everything about it. But I remember every detail… I am good at abstraction

Griffin showed me the most similar image to the ‘query image’ from 110k pieces of art.

Me: How? I mean how…

Griffin: I am good at abstraction, I may not know everything about it. But I remember every detail… Come on, take a peek at my mind

Me: …Th.. This is your mind?

Hi, I am Griffin. This is my mind.

Me: Any works recently?

Griffin: Yeah, these are artwork I learned from portraits back in Renaissance.

Me: You have been practicing a lot.

Griffin: Not all by myself. I worked with my friend Azure from Microsoft.

Griffin: What is your favorite Dutch artist?

Me: I would say Rembrandt and Vermeer.

Griffin: Why?

Me: When I first visited NL back in 2018, I was mostly impressed by these two artists.

Griffin: I have queried all their artworks. To Rembrandt or Vermeer?

Me: I think we should do both.
